Why should I choose iamillustious over other competitors?

Are you particular about who cuts and styles your hair? How about when choosing an aesthetician? No one would want some random person, especially when you are looking to have your teeth whitened. Here with iamillustrious, we use professional dental grade products. We are not on the same scale as what you may find within a mall kiosk or over the counter. Also, the fact that it is a Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) that is performing this cosmetic procedure, is one of the best reasons to choose iamillustrious. With that being said, we follow all standards and guidelines set by the College of Dental Hygiene of Ontario (CDHO). Visit our 'testimonials' page to see why you should choose us.

How successful is teeth whitening?

Yes, teeth whitening does work on natural teeth that have experienced some surface and/or subsurface stains left on or within the tooth enamel. Our clients have been very pleased with their results from our at-home whitening products, as well as our products for professional use. However, to maximize results and improve overall oral health it is best to have had a relatively recent dental cleaning prior to - although not necessary in order to have them whitened.

How does teeth whitening work?

Teeth whitening is principally a cosmetic procedure that removes sub surface stains and gives your teeth the appearance of a whiter and brighter smile. Like all cosmetic procedures, you cannot change your natural DNA. The colour of your teeth cannot change to a different colour than what you had when your adult teeth replaced your baby teeth. You can alter the base colour of your teeth only by having a cosmetic dentist do extensive work to replace your natural tooth structure with synthetic materials such as veneers, crowns or dental implants.

How long does teeth whitening last?

Average results last 6 months to 1 year, and this also depends entirely upon your own tooth enamel and on your daily habits. Teeth whitening results are not permanent, extensive procedures performed by a dentist like veneers are considered to be a form of a permanent change. It is expected that overtime, after teeth whitening that teeth can be restained by the many things we eat and drink daily.

How often can I come to have my teeth whitened?

It is safe to have your teeth whitened as early as 3-4 months from your last visit. On average, clients come between 4-6 months. In between visits, we recommend to use our at home products in order to maintain your results. These products are available for purchase on our web store or at our iamillustrious location.

Does it hurt?

Most people experience absolutely no sensitivity, but if so, it is very minimal and tolerable during procedure - it can be described as mild tingling sensation. Also, a small percentage experience sensitivity for about 24 hours post-whitening. Toothpaste that caters to sensitive teeth can be used during this duration. Keep in mind, that if you already have sensitive teeth prior to treatment, whitening can cause it to be a little more sensitive 24-48 hours post-whitening. Nothing to be alarmed about, it should resume back to normal within 24-48 hours. And just to mention, it will all be worth it!

Are white strips any good to use?

Using white strips is usually a one size fits all, plus they can become very costly to purchase. The whitening agent is a minimal percentage so that is it safe for people to use at home. Therefore, you would have to use the whitening strips almost daily until you are happy with the results you have - therefore, it is causing your teeth and gums to become possibly sensitive. It is sensitive because with the whitening strips the gel is touching your gums. With the 'iamillustrious' system we use a percentage of whitening gel that is made for only dental professionals to use - so you achieve the results at one visit. It also contains an agent that assists in minimizing or eliminating sensitivity. During your appointment a desensitizing application is included with your treatment and you will have the opportunity to purchase and/or take home any additional products to aid in easing the sensitivity post-whitening. Keep in mind, that when coming in to have the procedure done with us, the whitening gel is only placed onto your teeth, and your gums are protected during the whole procedure.

How many shades whiter?

Individual results vary - this depends entirely on the person, everyone is different. Average results are 2-4 shades whiter. As with any cosmetic treatment, the degree of improvement is greatly influenced by the client's age, dental health (particularly in the health of tooth enamel), thickness of enamel, general health, genetics, and personal or dietary habits. Regularity and quality of dental care, brushing and flossing habits, smoking, and use of certain prescription or recreational drugs can have a significant effect on how bright an individual's teeth will get.

How long does it take?

There is a quick consultation prior to the treatment. The iamillustious teeth whitening procedure is one visit, essentially it is three applications of 10, 12 or 15 minutes (*dependent on starting shade). A before and after picture will be taken, and you will also receive a pre and post sensitivity treatment. Altogether, please plan or to expect to spend about 90 minutes. If you have booked an appointment as a couple, it will be done one person after the other.

How long after my treatment should I refrain from eating and drinking?

Water is acceptable for about 1-2 hours directly after treatment. So, it is recommended to eat prior to appointment. It is best not to eat or drink any dark or highly pigmented food or beverage for at least 24-48 hours. A 'white diet' is suggested. Detailed instructions will be provided at your appointment.

Is there any side effects to teeth whitening?

Possible side effects are as listed but not limited to. All side effects known are only temporary. Allergic type reaction can be possible. If you have a known allergy to hydrogen peroxide you would not be a candidate for whitening. Gum blanching is also a temporary side effect. It can happen when the gel may come in contact with the gums and cause them to 'blanche" (turn white). Gums will resort back to normal as early as 10 minutes post-procedure and up to 24 hours. This can result in irritation or sensitivity for a very small and short period of time. In very rare cases, an individual can wake the next morning with a small blister caused by the interaction of the peroxide. This is not harmful, but rather a healthy healing process to cure. During the procedure a gum barrier is placed to protect the gums to prevent gel from touching. A vitamin E and remineralizing treatment is included with the procedure to help heal and soothe the teeth and gums and lessen sensitivity. Toothpaste for sensitivity can also be used as a topical way to assist in any discomfort. Another possible side effect only seen in a small percentage, is hypocalcification. After whitening, these more calcified areas on one's tooth/teeth can become more prominent and appear more white or chalky. This will fade and even out, after a day or two once the teeth re-hydrate.

Smoking is a habit of mine. Would that be an issue?

It is suggested to try and eliminate or limit smoking for 24-48 hours post-whitening. Smoking is a huge contributing factor when it comes to stained teeth. Smoke stain is known to be considered very stubborn stain to remove, so at times an individual may be recommended to return for a second treatment to achieve their desired results.

Is this service covered by dental insurance?

Most insurance companies do not cover teeth whitening, due to the fact that this procedure is considered cosmetic - we do not accept insurance. Part of the main reason why iamillustrious was created and opened was to make teeth whitening affordable and easy to maintain for anyone and everyone.

What forms of payment do you accept?

If paying for services or products during your appointment, we accept cash, and all major credit cards via "square" (check out square.com/ca for further information; surcharge may apply for credit card payments).
